About the Role:
HighLevel is looking for a sharp, proactive, and tech-savvy AI & IP Counsel to help us manage and grow our global intellectual property portfolio while guiding the company through the fast-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence regulation and compliance. Based in India, this role is a critical part of our legal team and will partner closely with engineering, product, and external counsel to support innovation at scale.You'll be responsible for analyzing, shaping, and managing our patents, trademarks, and other IP assets while building frameworks to ensure IP hygiene and open-source compliance. You will also be the point person for legal and regulatory matters relating to AI—both how we use it internally and how it operates on our platform.
What You'll Be Doing
- 🧠 Intellectual Property
- Assess and manage HighLevel’s current IP portfolio (patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets).
- Conduct IP audits and develop strategies for new filings (in collaboration with external counsel where needed).
- Advise on patentability, inventorship, ownership, and IP protection strategies across global jurisdictions.
- Draft and review trademark filings, manage renewals, and monitor for potential infringement.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and developers to understand product innovations and capture patentable features.
- Educate and enforce IP hygiene best practices across the company (design documentation, independent creation records, etc.).
- Review contracts and commercial agreements for IP ownership, licensing, indemnification, and open source use.
- Monitor third-party IP risks and infringement issues.
- 🤖 Artificial Intelligence Legal Strategy
- Advise on responsible AI development and deployment practices, including training data usage, transparency, and fairness.
- Review AI product features for legal and ethical risk and suggest mitigation strategies.
- Monitor evolving AI legal frameworks (e.g., India’s proposed DPDP Act, EU AI Act, U.S. state and federal developments).
- Work cross-functionally to prepare HighLevel for future AI regulations and audits.
- Create and maintain internal guidance around AI use, disclosures, and external communications.
What You'll Bring
- LL.B. (or equivalent law degree) and license to practice law in India; LL.M. or IP specialization preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in intellectual property law, with a strong background in artificial intelligence, software patents and trademarks.
- Solid understanding of open source licensing frameworks (e.g., MIT, GPL, Apache).
- Demonstrated experience working with AI/ML technologies and relevant legal considerations.
- Strong contract drafting and review skills, particularly IP license and SaaS-related provisions.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills—you’ll work closely with engineers, product leaders, and legal peers.
- A proactive mindset with strong analytical and project management abilities.
- Ability to simplify complex legal and technical concepts for non-lawyers.
- Comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced, global SaaS company.
- Experience managing IP portfolios for U.S.-based tech companies or startups.
- Familiarity with global AI legal frameworks (EU AI Act, U.S. NIST AI RMF, etc.).
- Hands-on exposure to emerging technologies such as generative AI, APIs, or data governance.
