Job Description

Why Standard Fleet?

Standard Fleet is building the next generation of Fleet Management software. With Standard Fleet, electric vehicles are first-class citizens and fleet operators no longer need to install cumbersome "dongles" in their vehicles to track or manage their vehicles. Our mission is to accelerate the commercial adoption of electric vehicles by setting a new standard in fleet management.

Every member of the Standard Fleet team is fueled by an unwavering passion for transportation and electrification and is deeply committed to making our products better. We come from companies like Apple, Uber, Tesla, Stripe, Robinhood, Yelp, and Embark. In 2024 our revenue grew by nearly 6X.

Standard Fleet is well-funded and backed by some of Silicon Valley’s top investors. Some of our founding team members, including our CEO David Hodge, founded Embark. At Embark, the team built a popular transportation app used by millions, which the team ultimately sold to Apple.

We’re seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our engineer team and help build the software solutions that fleets desperately need to unlock the power of connected and electric vehicles. You’ll play a foundational role in setting the technical and organizational direction for engineering, and help define the future of mobility while empowering thousands of businesses to switch to electric vehicles. This is a rare opportunity to lead in a rapidly evolving market with enormous growth potential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and strategic leadership across backend engineering, infrastructure, and platform architecture.

  • Manage and grow a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, excellence, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with design, customer experience, product, and sales teams, as well as key customers, to define and deliver impactful features.

  • Drive the design and execution of scalable, reliable, and secure systems to support our fleet management platform as we scale.

  • Guide decisions around systems architecture, data modeling, and service design while balancing speed with long-term maintainability.

  • Oversee backend service deployment, observability, and incident response to ensure reliability and uptime.

  • Identify and address scaling challenges, technical debt, and performance bottlenecks across the stack.

  • Stay close to customers and industry trends to ensure our product and technical roadmap align with evolving fleet needs.

Qualifications

We don’t believe in qualification checkboxes for candidates. These often cause great candidates to think they’re not qualified. If you think you can help us scale our business, let’s talk and see if we’re a fit.

You might be a good fit if…

  • You have a deep passion for the future of transportation and building systems that create real-world impact.

  • You’ve led and grown backend engineering teams in fast-paced startup environments.

  • You have strong technical foundations in infrastructure, cloud services, system design, and backend development (e.g., Go, Python, GCP, AWS).

  • You are a systems thinker who can connect product goals to long-term technical vision and execution.

  • You’re an excellent communicator and cross-functional collaborator.

  • You thrive in environments where autonomy, initiative, and leadership are expected.

  • You’ve built and scaled backend systems that require high reliability, performance, and resilience.

  • You have a customer-first mindset and bring empathy into product and technical decision-making.
