THE ROLE

AG1 is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineering Lead with a strong background in backend systems and service integration to join our team. This role is ideal for engineering leaders who specialize in building, maintaining, and scaling backend services, APIs, and data pipelines—not purely front-end application development. You will report to the Director of Engineering and lead a team focused on delivering reliable, scalable, and secure service integrations that power our customer-facing platforms. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape product vision and technical strategy in alignment with business goals.

Note: While this is technically a fullstack role, the focus is on backend services and integrations. Engineers who primarily specialize in UI/front-end application development will likely find this role misaligned with their strengths.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead and mentor a team of fullstack software engineers with a focus on backend service development, API integrations, and platform scalability.
  • Evaluate and implement best practices for distributed systems, monitoring, and fault-tolerant architecture.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in system architecture, database design, API development, and security.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and QA engineers, to define project goals, priorities, deliverables, and quality assurance.
  • Lead the evaluation and adoption of new technologies and tools to improve efficiency, scalability, and reliability across the stack.
  • Implement and enforce security best practices to protect customer data and ensure compliance across all layers of the stack.
  • Drive technical excellence and best practices across the engineering teams, Drive technical excellence in service delivery, including observability, testing, and deployment pipelines.
  • Establish and maintain documentation of engineering processes, guidelines, and standards for both front-end and back-end development.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, presenting technical solutions, and providing progress updates for the related projects.
  • Encourage a culture of innovation and continuous learning within the engineering team.
  • Set performance metrics and KPIs for the engineering team to track progress and align with business objectives.
  • Engage in client-facing activities, such as presentations and demos, to showcase technical capabilities across the stack.
  • Actively participate in coding and development to maintain hands-on technical expertise.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Deep experience with Node.js/NestJS for backend service development; strong understanding of API lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency in developing Restful web services using Node.js and Nest.JS, and front-end applications using React/Next.js and Typescript.
  • Proficiency in using AWS services, particularly ECS, SNS/SQS, Lambda Functions, and CloudWatch.
  • Experience integrating with front-end development workflows, including modern state management, and Immutable.js for immutable data structures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in software software development, including at least 4 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience leading software engineers, with a track record of delivering high-quality technical products.
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, with experience using GitLab CI/CD.
  • Strong knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
  • Strong knowledge of database systems, API development, and system architecture.
  • Strong knowledge of security principles and best practices.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases, such as CosmosDB and MongoDB, as well as with relational databases like PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools, such as Datadog and AWS CloudWatch.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for building high-quality user interfaces and back-end systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience building and deploying mobile apps using Flutter or React Native is a plus.
  • Experience with headless CMS solutions (Sanity, Contentful, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience in a Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) or Commerce tech stack/environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with e-commerce platforms like Shopify and subscription platforms is preferred.
  • Familiarity with front-end server-side rendering and Vercel is a plus.
  • Familiarity with GTM (Google Tag Manager), A/B testing tools, marketing pixels, and 3rd party tracking is a plus.

AG1 is dedicated to providing equitable and competitive compensation & benefits packages. For this particular role, the base salary range is $185,000 - $200,000 and will ultimately be decided at the offer stage, based on an individual candidate’s level of skills and experience aligned with the needs of this role. Base salary is one component of total compensation for this position. We provide a competitive mix of base salary, performance bonus, and stock option allocation for eligible roles.
